An information ecosystem (infoökosysteemi) refers to the dynamic network of information creation, distribution, and use within a society. It includes actors such as content creators, data producers, platforms, publishers, libraries, researchers, educators, policymakers, and end users; technologies like search engines, social media, news aggregators, databases; and institutions such as laws, standards, and norms that shape access, quality, and trust. The ecosystem is characterized by flows of data, attention, and trust, mediated by algorithms, interfaces, and governance mechanisms.

Information flows enable knowledge production, decision making, civic deliberation, commerce and culture. Interactions among actors create feedback loops: user engagement influences platform design, algorithmic curation affects visibility, data practices influence policy and innovation. Interoperability, open standards, and open data can strengthen resilience and reduce fragmentation; digital literacy helps users evaluate credibility. The sustainability of an information ecosystem depends on diverse, independent sources, transparent algorithms, fair business models, and robust privacy protections.

Common challenges include misinformation and disinformation, filter bubbles, data monopolies, surveillance, and unequal access. Governance approaches include transparency about data practices and algorithmic design, accountability for platform intermediaries, privacy protections, and media literacy. Ensuring high-quality information requires diverse sources, fact-checking, and credible signals of veracity; safeguarding freedom of expression while mitigating harm is often debated. Metrics for information quality, reach, and impact are used to monitor ecosystem health.
