Infiltratiivinen is a term used in medicine, particularly in pathology and oncology, to describe a process where abnormal cells or tissue spread into and invade surrounding healthy tissues. It signifies a lack of containment, where the aberrant cells are not confined to their original location but actively grow into adjacent structures. This is often contrasted with non-infiltrative or in situ processes, where abnormal cells remain within their initial boundaries.

The concept of infiltrative growth is crucial in diagnosing and understanding the behavior of diseases, especially cancer. Infiltrative cancers are generally considered more aggressive than non-infiltrative ones because they have the potential to invade blood vessels, lymphatic channels, and nerves, which facilitates metastasis, the spread of cancer to distant parts of the body. Pathologists examine tissue samples under a microscope to identify characteristics of infiltrative growth, such as irregular cell borders, invasion into the stroma (connective tissue), and the presence of abnormal cells in areas where they do not normally belong.

The degree of infiltration can influence treatment strategies. For instance, a non-infiltrative tumor might be surgically removed with a good prognosis, while an infiltrative tumor may require more extensive surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of treatments to manage its spread. Understanding whether a condition is infiltrative or not is therefore a key determinant in patient management and predicting outcomes.
