Imagingstress is a term used in medical imaging and related research to describe the stress responses elicited by imaging procedures, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to a lesser extent computed tomography (CT). It refers to both psychological distress, such as anxiety or fear, and physiological arousal, including increased heart rate and sweating, triggered by the imaging environment and process.

Causes include claustrophobic confinement, loud scanner noises, duration of the exam, use of contrast agents, and anticipation of results. Prior medical experiences, age, and familiarity with procedures influence risk. Imagingstress can lead to movement, degraded image quality, longer exam times, and in some cases discomfort such as dizziness or nausea.

Assessment relies on self-report scales (for example, visual analog scales or anxiety inventories) and physiological indicators such as heart rate, skin conductance, respiration, and cortisol when collected. Some studies examine neural correlates of imagingstress using functional imaging to map stress-related brain activity during procedures.

Management focuses on patient preparation and comfort: mock scanner sessions, detailed explanations, distraction or entertainment, ear protection, comfortable positioning, and minimized exam duration. In select cases, pharmacologic anxiolysis may be appropriate under medical supervision, particularly for children or highly anxious patients.

Imagingstress is an area of ongoing research aimed at reducing patient distress and improving data quality. Its terminology remains informal and variable across disciplines, and researchers emphasize nonpharmacologic strategies and standardized assessment methods to enable comparisons.
