Imagestabilized refers to a set of techniques and systems designed to reduce blur in photographs and video caused by camera shake. The term encompasses hardware-based approaches in lenses and bodies, as well as software-based stabilization, and is found in cameras, camcorders, and smartphones.

The principal forms are optical image stabilization (OIS), in-body or sensor-shift stabilization (IBIS), and electronic or digital stabilization (EIS). OIS moves lens elements to counteract movement; IBIS shifts the image sensor itself. EIS relies on processing to align and crop frames to reduce motion. Many devices pair methods, such as IBIS with lens-based stabilization, to maximize effectiveness.

How it works involves detecting motion with sensors like gyroscopes and accelerometers, then applying counter-movements through hardware or software. In photography, stabilization can allow slower shutter speeds without blur, effectively extending hand-held stability by several stops. In video, stabilization smooths motion across frames, reducing jitters and unwanted pan movements.

Applications are widespread, from consumer smartphones to professional cameras. Imagestabilized systems enable sharper stills in low light and smoother footage in movement-heavy scenes. Users may notice a slight crop or processing latency, and some extreme movements can still overwhelm stabilization. Power consumption and cost are additional considerations.

Historically, image stabilization emerged in the late 20th century and has since evolved into integrated solutions.
