Ilmasydänkelat, also known as air-core coils, are a type of inductor that lacks a ferromagnetic core. Instead, the windings are supported by a non-magnetic material or simply by the structure of the windings themselves. This absence of a core material has several implications for the coil's performance and applications.

The primary advantage of ilmasydänkelat is their linearity. Without a magnetic core, they do not exhibit saturation, meaning their inductance remains constant regardless of the current flowing through them. This makes them highly suitable for applications where predictable and stable inductance is crucial, such as in resonant circuits, filters, and high-frequency radio applications. They also tend to have lower losses compared to iron-core inductors at high frequencies due to the absence of eddy currents and hysteresis losses in a core material.

However, ilmasydänkelat typically have lower inductance values for a given size and number of turns compared to coils with magnetic cores. This is because magnetic materials significantly increase the magnetic flux density for a given magnetic field, thereby increasing inductance. Consequently, ilmasydänkelat are often larger or require more windings to achieve the same inductance as a cored inductor. Their magnetic field can also spread out more, potentially leading to unwanted coupling with nearby components. Despite these limitations, their predictable behavior and low losses make them indispensable in certain electronic designs.
