Iguanas are a genus of lizards belonging to the family Iguanidae. The term "iguana" is often used more broadly to refer to all members of the family Iguanidae and related families. Green iguanas are large, arboreal lizards that are primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruits. They are characterized by their distinctive crests of spines running down their backs, dewlaps (a flap of skin under their chin), and three eyes, including a parietal eye on top of their head that senses light and helps regulate their circadian rhythms. Iguanas are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature. They can often be found basking in the sun.

Iguanas are popular in the pet trade, and their eggs and meat are consumed in some regions. Conservation efforts are in place for some iguana species due to habitat loss and hunting. Their life cycle involves laying eggs, typically in nests dug in sandy soil. The young are independent shortly after hatching.
