Ideghártyakórképek, commonly known as retinal detachment, is a serious medical condition where the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, separates from its underlying tissue. This separation disrupts normal retinal function, leading to vision disturbances or, if untreated, permanent blindness. The retina consists of multiple layers, and when these layers detach, they can no longer transmit visual signals effectively to the brain.

The condition can occur spontaneously or as a result of underlying eye diseases, trauma, or certain medical procedures such as cataract surgery. Risk factors include advanced age, male gender, high myopia (nearsightedness), previous eye surgery, and a family history of retinal detachment. Symptoms often develop gradually and may include floaters (small spots or squiggles that drift through the field of vision), flashes of light, a curtain-like shadow over the visual field, or a sudden decrease in vision. In some cases, patients may experience no symptoms until the detachment becomes advanced.

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive eye examination, including dilation of the pupil to allow the ophthalmologist to inspect the retina using specialized instruments like an ophthalmoscope or slit lamp. Additional imaging techniques, such as ultrasound or optical coherence tomography (OCT), may be used to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of the detachment.

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the detachment. Common procedures include pneumatic retinopexy, where a gas bubble is injected into the eye to press the retina back into place, or surgical interventions such as vitrectomy, scleral buckling, or laser therapy. The goal of treatment is to reattach the retina and prevent further complications, such as retinal tears or glaucoma. Early intervention significantly improves the chances of a successful outcome and preserves vision.

Prevention focuses on managing risk factors, such as controlling chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, avoiding eye trauma, and undergoing regular eye examinations, especially for individuals with a higher risk profile. While retinal detachment cannot always be prevented, early detection and prompt treatment are key to minimizing long-term visual impairment.
