ID badges, known in Hungarian as idbélyegek (often written as ID-bélyegek), are credentials used to verify a person’s identity and to control access to facilities, networks, or events. They are commonly issued by employers, schools, government agencies, or event organizers and can be worn as plastic cards or displayed on mobile devices as digital credentials.

A typical badge shows the holder's photo, full name, job title or role, and the issuing organization. It may also include an employee or member number, department, and an expiration date. Security features such as holographic overlays, microtext, and color schemes help deter counterfeiting, while machine-readable elements like barcodes, QR codes, magnetic stripes, or RFID/NFC chips enable automated checks and access control.

Badge types vary: employee or staff badges, contractor or vendor badges, student or participant badges, and visitor badges. In higher-security contexts, government or military badges may use standards such as PIV (Personal Identity Verification) and CAC (Common Access Card) in the United States, which integrate with broader identity and access management systems.

Issuance typically involves identity verification, photo capture, and assignment of a unique credential number. Badges may be revoked or suspended when a person leaves an organization or loses a badge. Organizations should have policies for badge lifecycle management, privacy, data protection, and procedures for reporting lost cards. Care should be taken to minimize unnecessary data on the badge and to protect stored information from abuse.

Badges support security and operational efficiency by enabling swift identity checks, access control, time-and-attendance, and visitor management. They are only as effective as the associated processes and training, and they can be forged or misused if not properly secured.
