iPadOS

iPadOS is a mobile operating system developed by Apple for the iPad family. It is derived from iOS but tailored to the iPad’s larger screen, with an emphasis on multitasking, file management, Apple Pencil input, and keyboard use.

History and scope: Apple began releasing iPad-specific software as a separate branch with iPadOS 13 in 2019, separating iPad updates from iOS. The branding reflected the tablet-focused design language and feature set that distinguishes iPadOS from iOS while preserving core system components.

Key features include multitasking capabilities such as Split View, Slide Over, and Stage Manager; a redesigned home screen with widgets; the Files app for document management; support for external storage and USB-C connections on compatible models; and robust input options for Apple Pencil, trackpads, and keyboards.

iPadOS also introduced or expanded several ecosystem features, including App Library and home screen widgets (iPadOS 14), enhanced Continuity features, and improved external display support. Input methods such as trackpad and mouse support were added in an update to broaden productivity on the device.

Relationship and device support: iPadOS runs on iPad models with Apple-designed processors and receives annual updates through Apple’s software cycle. It shares much of its underlying framework with iOS but provides tablet-optimized UI and capabilities to support larger screens and multi-app workflows.
