Höfðuborgarsvæðið, often translated as the Capital Region, is the most populous area of Iceland. It encompasses the capital city of Reykjavík and six surrounding municipalities: Álftanes, Garðabær, Hafnarfjörður, Kópavogur, Mosfellsbær, and Seltjarnarnes. This region forms the political, economic, and cultural heart of the nation.

The Capital Region is situated in southwestern Iceland, along the coast of Faxaflói bay. Its geography is characterized by lava fields, coastal plains, and a few prominent mountains. The climate is subpolar oceanic, with cool summers and relatively mild winters for its latitude.

Reykjavík, as the capital, is the primary hub for government, business, education, and cultural institutions. The other municipalities, while distinct, are closely integrated with Reykjavík, forming a functional urban sprawl. Commuting between these areas is common, and public transportation networks connect the various towns.

The economy of the Capital Region is diverse, with major sectors including services, technology, tourism, and fisheries. It is the main entry point for international travelers, with Keflavík International Airport located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, which is adjacent to the Capital Region.

The area's population density is significantly higher than any other part of Iceland, making it the most dynamic and diverse region in the country.
