A hypervisor, also known as a virtual machine monitor (VMM), is a software layer that enables the creation and management of virtual machines (VMs). Type 2 hypervisors, on the other hand, run on top of an existing operating system. They are often used for desktop virtualization and testing purposes. Examples include VMware Workstation, Oracle VirtualBox, and Parallels Desktop. These hypervisors are generally easier to set up and use but may have lower performance compared to Type 1 hypervisors.

Hypervisors provide several benefits, including resource isolation, improved hardware utilization, and simplified management of multiple operating systems. They are widely used in data centers, cloud computing, and enterprise environments to optimize resource usage and enhance flexibility.
