Hydroizolat, or hydroisolat, is a term used in construction to denote waterproofing measures and materials intended to prevent the ingress of water and moisture into buildings and structures. It encompasses a range of products and systems designed to create a continuous barrier against liquid water and, in many cases, against water vapor as well. The goal is to protect foundations, walls, floors, and other elements from deterioration caused by moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and chemical attack.

Common forms of hydroizolat systems include liquid-applied membranes that are brushed, rolled, or sprayed onto prepared substrates; sheet membranes made from bitumen, synthetic rubber, or modified polymers; cementitious waterproofing coatings that cure to a dense, impermeable layer; and crystalline waterproofing admixtures added to concrete or mortar to form insoluble crystals in capillaries and pores. Depending on the application, coatings and membranes may be reinforced with fabrics or carriers to improve mechanical strength and puncture resistance.

Typical applications cover basements and foundations, bathrooms and wet rooms, roofs and terraces, balconies, tunnels, retaining walls, and underground structures. Substrates commonly treated include concrete, masonry, and concrete blocks. Proper surface preparation is essential: the surface must be clean, sound, and free of contaminants; moisture content and temperature should meet product specifications; and bonding primers may be required.

Installation and maintenance emphasize following manufacturer instructions and applicable building codes. Inspect after installation for defects such as cracks or delamination, and perform timely repairs. Periodic reapplication or recoat is common for some systems to maintain long-term performance, especially where structural movements or severe exposure exist.
