Hydrauliikan, the Finnish term for hydraulics, refers to the use of confined incompressible fluids to transmit, control, and power mechanical systems. Central to hydraulic technology is Pascal's law: pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally in all directions, allowing force multiplication with different piston areas.

A typical hydraulic system includes a pump, reservoir, actuators (cylinders or motors), valves (directional, pressure, flow), filters, and piping. Fluids can be mineral oil-based, synthetic, or water-glycol blends, selected for lubricity, fire resistance, and temperature performance. Performance depends on viscosity, temperature, and seal integrity.

The main advantages are high force in a compact package and precise, smooth control; drawbacks include heat generation, energy losses, potential leaks, and environmental risks from spills.

History: concepts emerged from Pascal in the 17th century, followed by Bramah’s hydraulic press and subsequent mobile and industrial hydraulic systems that expanded power density and automation.
