Hugverk is the Icelandic term for intellectual property, referring to legal rights that protect creations of the mind such as inventions, literary and artistic works, brand identifiers, and confidential information. The purpose of hugverk is to encourage innovation and creativity by granting exclusive control over how these creations are used and exploited.

The main categories of hugverk align with international practice. Patents protect new technical inventions and processes, typically lasting about 20 years from filing. Copyright covers literary and artistic works, with duration generally extending for the life of the author plus a defined posthumous period (commonly 70 years). Trademarks protect brand names, logos, and other identifiers used in commerce, often renewable indefinitely as long as they are kept in use and renewed. Industrial designs cover the appearance of products and have a limited term, usually subject to renewal. Trade secrets protect confidential business information as long as secrecy is maintained, with no fixed expiration.

Ownership usually lies with the creator, though rights may be assigned, licensed, or transferred to employers or other parties through agreements.
