Hudfettets is the Swedish term for subcutaneous fat, the adipose tissue located just beneath the skin, commonly referred to as the hypodermis. This layer lies between the dermis and the underlying tissues, and its thickness varies by body region, sex, age, and overall body composition.

Subcutaneous fat is primarily white adipose tissue formed by adipocytes that store triglycerides, along with connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves. Small amounts of brown adipose tissue occur in humans, especially in infants and in certain adults, and are involved in heat generation.

Functions of hudfettets include energy storage, insulation to reduce heat loss, and mechanical cushioning of muscles and bones. The tissue also secretes signaling molecules called adipokines, such as leptin and adiponectin, which influence appetite, metabolism and inflammation.

Distribution of hudfettets varies by sex and age; women tend to accumulate fat in the hips and thighs, while men more often store fat in the abdomen. High overall fat can accompany metabolic risks, though subcutaneous fat is generally considered less harmful than visceral fat. Conditions affecting the tissue include lipodystrophy or benign lipomas; assessment can involve skinfold measurements or imaging.
