Horsehide is leather produced from the hide of horses. Unlike rawhide, which is simply dried, horsehide undergoes tanning to produce a durable, pliable material that can be used for long-lasting goods. The thickness and grain of horsehide vary, but it is generally dense, with strong abrasion resistance and a tight, distinctive grain. It takes finishes and patinas well and tends to age with a characteristic, tough appearance.

In terms of properties, horsehide leather is typically stiffer and more rugged than many other leathers. It offers good tear strength and resistance to wear, making it suitable for protective or high-durability applications. Finishes range from natural to dyed tones such as brown or black. Care requires regular conditioning to prevent drying and cracking; avoid excessive heat, direct sunlight, and water exposure.

Historically, horsehide gained particular fame for baseball gloves, where its stiffness and durability helped with quick, solid catches. In modern production, it appears in specialized or premium leather goods, including high-end gloves, belts, wallets, and certain saddlery or upholstery applications. Availability is more limited than cowhide, and price can be higher due to sourcing considerations and market demand.

Because horse hides are less common in mass production, products made from horsehide are typically considered specialty items. Tanning methods vary and may include chrome or vegetable processes, influencing texture, color, and aging characteristics. Proper care and storage help maintain the leather’s strength and patina over time.
