Hipertrofie, also known as hypertrophy, refers to the increase in the size of an organ or tissue through the enlargement of its cells. This biological process is commonly associated with muscle growth resulting from strength training or physical activity, but it can also occur in other tissues such as the heart, glands, or other organs.

Muscle hypertrophy occurs when muscle fibers increase in diameter due to prolonged or intense mechanical stress, leading to enhanced strength and mass. This process involves an increase in the synthesis of muscle proteins, supported by hormonal signals such as testosterone and growth hormone. There are two primary types of hypertrophy in muscles: sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, which involves an increase in the volume of sarcoplasmic fluid, and myofibrillar hypertrophy, which involves an increase in the size and number of myofibrils, the contractile components of muscle fibers.

Pathological hypertrophy can develop as a response to certain conditions, such as hypertension, where the heart muscle enlarges (cardiac hypertrophy) in an attempt to overcome increased workload. While some hypertrophic adaptations can be beneficial, such as increased muscle mass improving physical performance, pathological hypertrophy may lead to adverse health outcomes, including heart failure.
