Hiekkamaaperät, often translated as sandy soils, are soil types characterized by a high proportion of sand particles. Sand particles are the largest soil particles, typically ranging in size from 0.05 to 2.0 millimeters in diameter. This granular texture results from the weathering of rocks, such as granite and quartz, over long periods.

The primary defining characteristic of hiekkamaaperät is their excellent drainage and aeration. Due to the large pore spaces between sand grains, water passes through them quickly, which can be beneficial for some plants but also leads to rapid drying. This also means they have a low capacity to retain nutrients, as these can be leached away with the water. Consequently, sandy soils are generally less fertile than soils with a higher clay or silt content.

In Finland, hiekkamaaperät are common, particularly in areas that were shaped by glacial activity. The meltwaters from glaciers deposited large amounts of sand, creating extensive sandy plains and dunes. These soils are often found in coastal regions and along river valleys.

Despite their limitations in nutrient retention and water-holding capacity, hiekkamaaperät have their uses. They are often suitable for specific types of agriculture, such as growing root vegetables or certain grains, provided irrigation and fertilization are managed effectively. They also play a role in natural ecosystems, supporting specialized vegetation adapted to drier conditions. The low organic matter content typical of undisturbed sandy soils can also influence their color, often appearing lighter than other soil types.
