Herosuchus is an extinct genus of large, predatory crocodyliform that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 to 66 million years ago. Fossils of Herosuchus have been discovered primarily in North America, with the most notable finds coming from the Hell Creek Formation in Montana, the Lance Formation in Wyoming, and the Scollard Formation in Alberta, Canada. The name *Herosuchus* translates to "hero crocodile," reflecting its imposing size and formidable reputation among prehistoric predators.

Herosuchus is distinguished by its robust, heavily armored skull, which features a pronounced ridge along the midline of the snout and a series of bony bosses and ridges. These features suggest a strong bite force, likely used to crush bone or penetrate thick hides. Estimates of its length vary, but it is believed to have reached up to 6 meters (20 feet) in total length, making it one of the largest crocodyliforms of its time. Its body was likely heavily built, with a broad, muscular tail adapted for powerful swimming and hunting.

The diet of Herosuchus remains a subject of debate among paleontologists. While it was likely an apex predator, its feeding habits may have differed from those of modern crocodiles. Some researchers suggest it may have been an ambush hunter, targeting large dinosaurs such as hadrosaurs or ceratopsians, though direct evidence of predation is scarce. Others propose it could have been a scavenger or opportunistic feeder, taking advantage of carcasses left behind by other predators.

Herosuchus lived alongside other notable Late Cretaceous fauna, including tyrannosaurids like *Tyrannosaurus rex*, hadrosaurs, and various small mammals. Its coexistence with these dinosaurs highlights the competitive and complex ecosystems of the time. The extinction of Herosuchus, along with all non-avian dinosaurs, occurred during the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction event, likely caused by the asteroid impact and subsequent environmental changes.
