Hengerpárok, often translated as "cylinder pairs," refers to a configuration in internal combustion engines where two cylinders are positioned adjacent to each other and share a common crankshaft. This arrangement is distinct from inline or V-engine configurations where cylinders are typically in a single line or in two banks angled relative to each other. Hengerpárok are most famously associated with the BMW motorcycle engine, particularly the boxer-twin layout.

In a boxer-twin configuration, the cylinders are arranged horizontally opposite each other, with their pistons moving in and out simultaneously. This opposing motion provides inherent balance, reducing vibration and contributing to a smooth running engine. The relatively low center of gravity achieved by this horizontal layout also enhances a motorcycle's handling characteristics. While other engine types may utilize paired cylinders in different orientations, the term hengerpárok is often used colloquially to describe this specific opposing-cylinder arrangement. The design offers advantages in terms of packaging, power delivery, and mechanical simplicity compared to more complex multi-cylinder engines.
