Harkintasiäisten is a Finnish term that translates to "consideration nuts" or "thinking nuts." It refers to a specific type of mushroom, more commonly known scientifically as Gyromitra esculenta. This fungus is characterized by its distinctive convoluted, brain-like cap, which can range in color from reddish-brown to dark brown. The stem is typically pale and stout.

Harkintasiäisten is found in coniferous forests, particularly in sandy or acidic soils, and often appears in spring. It is a highly sought-after edible mushroom in some regions, especially in Finland, where it has a long tradition of consumption. However, it is also notorious for its toxicity. Raw or improperly prepared harkintasiäisten contains gyromitrin, a compound that the body metabolizes into highly toxic monomethylhydrazine (MMH), a component of rocket fuel.

Consumption of undercooked harkintasiäisten can lead to severe poisoning, with symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, and headaches to liver damage, seizures, and even death. Despite the risks, many people continue to consume it after meticulous preparation methods, which typically involve prolonged boiling and discarding the cooking water multiple times. This process is believed to reduce the gyromitrin content to safer levels. Due to the inherent dangers, foraging and consuming harkintasiäisten is advised against by many health authorities, and its sale is banned in several countries.
