Harjoitteluvaihe is a structured period of practical training that is part of many educational programmes in Finland, particularly in technical, engineering and vocational fields. It follows the theoretical coursework and involves actual work experience in a professional environment. The term literally translates to “practice phase” or “internship” and is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and employment skills.

The main objectives of the harjoitteluvaihe are to enable students to apply theoretical knowledge, develop workplace competencies, and gain a realistic understanding of the industry they intend to enter. During this phase students typically work at a company or public institution for an agreed number of weeks, often ranging from 12 to 24 weeks, depending on the programme. Supervisory support is provided both by the educational institution and by the employer, with regular feedback sessions to monitor progress.

Recognition and assessment are integral components. Students must usually complete a portfolio documenting tasks, reflections, and achievements, which is evaluated by their instructors.
