Handgefühl, literally “hand feeling,” is a term used to describe the tactile and proprioceptive impression an object conveys when it is held, manipulated, or operated. It covers how the object feels in the hand, including texture, friction, temperature, weight, balance, rigidity, damping, and the feedback produced during use. The concept is central to judgments of usability, ergonomics, and perceived quality.

The components of handgefühl span physical properties and interaction characteristics. Surface texture and roughness, grip geometry, and surface friction influence how securely an object is held. Temperature and warmth affect comfort in different environments. Weight, center of gravity, and moment of inertia shape handling and maneuverability, while stiffness, vibration, and acoustics provide other cues about material and construct quality. The dynamic feel during use, such as softness or snap in a switch or the responsiveness of a tool, is also part of handgefühl.

Evaluation combines subjective and objective methods. Sensory panels and expert assessments capture user impressions, while objective measurements include surface roughness (Ra), friction coefficients, weight and balance, and vibration analysis. In practice, handgefühl is often assessed alongside aesthetics and function in product design, human–machine interfaces, and consumer testing.
