A handelsled is a traditional Danish and Norwegian type of sleigh, primarily used for transporting goods rather than passengers. The term "handelsled" combines the Danish/Norwegian word for "trade" (*handel*) with "sled," indicating its historical role in facilitating commerce in rural and mountainous regions.

Handelsleds were particularly common in Scandinavia during the 19th and early 20th centuries, when roads were poorly developed and winter conditions made wheeled transport difficult. These sleds were designed to carry heavy loads over snow and ice, often pulled by horses, oxen, or reindeer. Their sturdy frames, reinforced runners, and sometimes canvas or wooden sides allowed them to transport goods such as timber, fish, dairy products, and agricultural supplies between farms, markets, and coastal villages.

The construction of a handelsled varied by region but typically featured a flat or slightly sloped base for stability, reinforced with metal or wooden reinforcements. Some versions included a small cabin or cover to protect cargo from the elements. In Norway, the *handelsled* was especially important in areas like Finnmark and Trøndelag, where trade routes relied heavily on winter sledging.

With the advent of modern transportation—such as motorized vehicles and improved roads—the use of handelsleds declined significantly.
