Trøndelag

Trøndelag is a county in central Norway. It was created on 1 January 2018 by merging Nord-Trøndelag and Sør-Trøndelag, forming a single administrative region along the Trondheimsfjord. It borders Nordland to the north, Innlandet to the east, Møre og Romsdal to the southwest, and the Norwegian Sea to the west. The largest city is Trondheim, a major cultural and educational hub.

Geographically, Trøndelag offers a varied landscape with coastal towns along the fjord, fertile valleys, and inland mountains. The region includes a mix of agricultural areas, forests and rivers, and it has a long maritime heritage. The coastline and fjord system support fishing and transport.

Trøndelag has roughly 470,000 residents. The county government is the Trøndelag County Municipality. Trondheim is the largest urban center and home to major institutions such as the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and cultural sites like Nidaros Cathedral.

Economy: The region has diversified sectors, including shipping, fisheries, agriculture, forestry, energy production (notably hydropower), manufacturing, and services related to education and health care. The county is a transportation hub with the E6 highway and rail lines linking Oslo, Trondheim and the northern regions, and Trondheim Airport, Værnes, serves air traffic.

History and name: The term Trøndelag refers to the central area around Trondheim and has been used for centuries. The modern county was formed from Nord-Trøndelag and Sør-Trøndelag as part of regional reforms in Norway. The population speaks Norwegian, with Bokmål and Nynorsk used, and Trøndersk is common in speech.
