Hammaslangat, commonly known as dental floss, is a thread-like material used for cleaning between teeth and along the gumline. It is an essential tool for oral hygiene, complementing tooth brushing by reaching areas that a toothbrush cannot access. Dental floss is typically made from nylon or Teflon and comes in various forms, including waxed, unwaxed, flavored, and tape.

The primary purpose of using hammaslangat is to remove food particles and plaque that accumulate between teeth. If left undisturbed, this plaque can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Regular flossing helps prevent cavities by removing the bacteria responsible for producing acids that erode tooth enamel. It also plays a crucial role in preventing gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, by removing plaque from the gumline, which can cause inflammation and bleeding.

Proper technique is important for effective flossing. A sufficient length of floss should be used, typically around 18 inches, with a few inches wrapped around the middle fingers.
