halterhals

A halterhals, or halterneck, is a garment neckline defined by straps that wrap around the back of the neck, leaving the shoulders and often the back exposed. The design is supported primarily by the neck strap, rather than by sleeves or shoulder straps.

Construction varies. In its classic form a single strap or a slender band encircles the neck, with fabric covering the bust and chest. Some versions use a high neck with the straps converging at the back, or a crisscross pattern that forms the upper back. Halter necklines can be worn with backless, partially open, or fully covered backs, and may include additional fastenings such as hooks or ties.

Historically, the halter neckline gained prominence in Western fashion during the 20th century, particularly in evening gowns and swimwear. It remains a common choice for warm-weather attire and appears in dresses, tops, crop tops, and swimwear. The style is valued for showcasing the shoulders and neck while avoiding shoulder straps.

Fit and wearability vary. A halter can place pressure on the neck, so proper sizing and strap adjustment are important. It may provide less support for larger busts and for activities involving substantial movement. Tan lines can be more pronounced on exposed areas.

Care and materials: Halter garments use a range of fabrics, including cotton, jersey, satin, silk, and synthetic blends. Care depends on material: some halters require hand washing or gentle cycles; swimwear should be rinsed after exposure to chlorine or saltwater and air-dried flat.
