Haiglasõltuvus, also known as hospital addiction or iatrophilia, is a colloquial term used to describe a pattern of excessive and frequent seeking of medical attention or hospital admissions that is not medically justified. It is not a formally recognized psychiatric diagnosis in the major diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5 or ICD-10. Instead, it is often seen as a manifestation of underlying psychological issues.

Individuals exhibiting what might be termed haiglasõltuvus may present with a wide range of symptoms, often without a clear physical cause. They may frequently visit doctors' offices, emergency rooms, or request hospital stays, expressing persistent worries about their health or experiencing somatic symptoms that are difficult to explain medically. This behavior can be distressing for both the individual and healthcare providers, as it can lead to an overutilization of medical resources and a cycle of ineffective treatments.

The underlying causes are complex and can include various psychological conditions such as somatization disorder, illness anxiety disorder (formerly hypochondriasis), factitious disorder, or malingering. In some cases, it may be linked to personality traits or a history of trauma. The motivation behind seeking hospital care can vary, ranging from a genuine but misdirected desire for reassurance and care to a more complex psychological need for attention or control.

Management typically involves a multidisciplinary approach, focusing on addressing the psychological underpinnings rather than solely treating perceived physical ailments.
