The scope of a gynecologist's practice includes a wide range of services. They perform routine check-ups and screenings, such as pelvic exams, Pap smears to detect cervical cancer, and breast exams. They diagnose and treat conditions affecting the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. Common issues addressed by gynecologists include menstrual irregularities, infections like yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, and pelvic pain.

Gynecologists also play a crucial role in family planning and reproductive health. They provide counseling and prescriptions for contraception, and manage issues related to infertility. When pregnancy occurs, gynecologists often monitor the health of both the mother and the developing fetus during prenatal care, and deliver the baby.

The first gynecological visit is typically recommended for young women around the age of 13 to 21, or when they become sexually active. Regular visits thereafter are important for maintaining reproductive health and for early detection of potential problems.
