Guylines, or guy lines, are tensioned cords or ropes used to stabilize tall or flexible structures by transferring wind and load forces to secure anchors. They are commonly employed on camping tents, tarps and canopies, flagpoles, and certain sailing rigs. Guylines may be made from nylon, polyester, or high-strength polymers and are equipped with stakes, anchors, or weights at their ends, often featuring tensioning devices such as cord locks or adjusters.

Layout and hardware: Guylines attach at reinforced points on the structure and extend outward to anchors positioned in soil, snow, or other solid surfaces. In tents, lines are attached near corners and midpoints along the sides; tarps and shelters use multiple lines to create a stable polygon and maintain a taut, flat surface. Angles are typically around 30 to 50 degrees relative to the surface, and anchors are driven into soft ground or secured to objects such as rocks, posts, or vehicle tow points.

Installation considerations: Use appropriate lengths and avoid over-tensioning to minimize material strain. Reflective or bright lines improve visibility in low light. Employ tensioners or line-locks to adjust tension quickly. In windy conditions, add or reposition guylines and strengthen anchors; when not in use, retract or remove lines to reduce trip hazards and weathering.

Other uses and terminology: Outside camping, guylines support temporary structures, outdoor installations, or sailboat masts and poles. The term derives from the word guy, meaning a line used to guide or stabilize a structure; in nautical contexts, a similar line is used to control sails or masts. Guylines are valued for enhancing stability, safety, and versatility in outdoor and maritime settings.
