Gudstjeneste is a Christian worship service. In Norway the term is most commonly used for the regular Sunday gathering held in churches, especially within the Church of Norway, but it is used across many denominations. The purpose is to praise God, hear Scripture, and be formed in faith through prayer, preaching, and the sacraments.

Typical elements include opening hymns, confession of sins, readings from the Bible, a sermon, and prayers of intercession. Offerings are often collected, and the service may include a recital of creeds. In many churches nattverd, or Holy Communion, is celebrated and forms a central part of the service, while some gudstjenester do not include the sacrament. Music is commonly provided by an organ or choir.

The form varies by denomination. In liturgical churches such as the Church of Norway, the order of worship follows a defined liturgy and the liturgical year (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Pentecost). The main Sunday service is frequently called høymesse in many parishes. Denominations without a formal liturgy may still refer to their gatherings as gudstjenester.

Context and purpose extend beyond weekly worship. Gudstjenester function as communal gatherings for catechesis, baptisms, weddings, and funerals, and they contribute to shared identity and spiritual formation. Duration typically ranges from about 60 to 90 minutes, depending on denomination, occasion, and musical elements. Language and style vary, with some services featuring contemporary hymns and others emphasizing traditional repertoire and organ accompaniment.
