Gritbed, also written as grit bed, is a component used in water and wastewater treatment to remove inorganic solids known as grit from influent streams. The purpose of a gritbed is to protect downstream equipment and processes from abrasion, clogging, and excessive wear by capturing heavy particles such as sand, gravel, and other coarse sediments before they reach pumps, channels, and clarifiers.

In typical configurations, a gritbed is placed at or near the headworks of a treatment facility and may function as a fixed bed or as part of a dedicated grit removal unit. The bed consists of a layer of coarse granular media, such as gravel, crushed rock, or manufactured media, through which the incoming flow passes. Heavier particles tend to settle into the bed or become lodged within its pores, while lighter materials are carried on with the flow to subsequent treatment steps. Some designs use moving or periodically cleaned beds, employing scraping, flushing, or water-jet methods to remove accumulated grit.

Materials used for gritbeds range from natural gravels and crushed aggregates to specialized media with defined density and porosity. Media selection depends on factors including flow rate, particle size distribution, maintenance requirements, and compatibility with other treatment processes.

Maintenance and performance considerations include regular inspection to prevent clogging or channeling, scheduled removal of accumulated grit, and monitoring of flow velocity to ensure effective separation. Gritbeds are often discussed alongside other grit removal technologies such as grit chambers or grit traps, with the choice influenced by plant layout, inflow characteristics, and operational objectives.
