It is used in evaluating safety, comfort, and performance across consumer products and engineered systems.

Quantitative assessment commonly uses static and kinetic coefficients of friction, slip-resistance tests, and measurements of the grip force required to induce slip. Qualitative assessments include user trials and tactile or ergonomic evaluations. No single universal standard defines grippiness; the relevant metrics vary by context, such as footwear, gloves, tool handles, or robotic grippers.

Factors that influence grippiness include surface roughness and microtexture, material composition (rubber, polymer, metal), hardness and compliance, moisture and temperature at the contact interface, contamination (grease, dust), and ergonomic aspects such as grip shape, size, and weight distribution.

Applications span consumer goods (shoes, gloves, handles), sports equipment, industrial tooling, and robotics. Designers seek a balance between high enough grip to prevent slips and enough release for fatigue-free use, easy cleaning, and durability under wear and cleaning cycles.
