Granule-associated refers to molecules that localize to, or interact with, cellular granules. Granules are compact, membrane-bound or membraneless structures that store, process, or regulate the release of specific materials. The term is descriptive and broad, applying to proteins, RNAs, and other factors that participate in granule structure or function without implying a single pathway.

Granules occur in many cellular contexts. Secretory granules are found in endocrine and exocrine cells and store hormones or enzymes until secretion is triggered. RNA granules include stress granules and processing bodies, which organize mRNA metabolism during cellular stress or other conditions. Other granule types include lysosome-related organelles such as melanosomes and lipid droplets, each associated with distinct sets of proteins and functions. Granule-associated molecules may be integral components of the granule membrane, peripheral interactors, or transiently associating regulators.

Functions of granule-associated proteins or RNAs are diverse. In secretory granules, proteins like Rab GTPases and SNAREs commonly mediate granule trafficking, docking, and fusion with membranes. In RNA granules, RNA-binding proteins (for example, certain stress granule markers) help assemble the granule and regulate the fate of bound mRNAs. Across granule types, granule-associated factors influence biogenesis, stability, content sorting, and the regulated release of granule contents.

Researchers identify granule-associated components through methods such as co-localization with granule markers, subcellular fractionation, mass spectrometry-based proteomics, immunoprecipitation, and live-cell imaging. The concept highlights the dynamic and context-dependent nature of granule biology, as associations can change with cellular state, development, or stress.

Note: the standard adjectival form in the literature is granule-associated. The concatenated form granuleassociated may appear in some texts but is less conventional.
