In individuals with gonadal dysgenesis, the gonads may be rudimentary streaks of tissue instead of fully formed testes or ovaries.

The underlying cause of gonadal dysgenesis is typically chromosomal abnormalities. For example, in Swyer syndrome, individuals have a 46,XY chromosomal makeup but underdeveloped gonads due to mutations in genes critical for testicular development.
