In psychology, Goal-Setting Theory, developed by Edwin A. Locke and Gary Latham, posits that specific and challenging goals improve performance more than vague or easy goals, provided that feedback, commitment, and capability are in place. The effects are influenced by task complexity and situational factors, and feedback helps adjust effort and strategy.

Core practices include clarifying aims, selecting targets that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART). Other frameworks such as Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) are also used in organizations. Goals should align with broader values and available resources, with action plans, milestones, and regular progress reviews to guide effort and adjust strategies as needed.
