Glödnings is the Swedish term for a heat treatment commonly known in English as annealing. It is used for metals, glass, and some polymers to alter their physical properties by controlled heating and cooling.

The primary purpose of glödnings is to relieve internal stresses built up during forming and processing, increase ductility, and improve workability. In metals, the process can also homogenize the microstructure and reduce hardness. In glass, glödnings relieves thermal stresses that can cause cracking or distortion during use or further processing.

The general procedure involves heating the material to a specific temperature below its melting point, maintaining that temperature for a defined period, and then cooling it in a controlled manner. The exact temperatures, hold times, and cooling rates depend on the material type and alloy composition. Furnace-based or controlled-atmosphere environments are often used to minimize oxidation and to achieve uniform heating.

Variants of glödnings include full annealing, which aims for maximum softness and ductility by slow cooling from a high temperature; and process annealing, which restores ductility after cold work without fully resetting the microstructure. In steel, additional strategies such as recrystallization annealing or spheroidizing annealing may be employed to tailor grain structure and carbide distribution.

Applications span many industries. For metals, glödnings is common in post-forming treatment of sheet, wire, and cast parts. For glass, annealing reduces residual stresses after forming. While energy use and process control are important considerations, glödnings generally improves formability, reduces brittleness, and extends service life when properly applied.
