Glueable is an attribute of a material indicating that it can be bonded to another material using an adhesive. The degree to which a substance is glueable depends on factors such as surface energy, porosity, cleanliness, moisture content, and the chemical compatibility between the substrate and the adhesive. In practice, some materials bond easily with many adhesives, while others require specialized systems or surface treatments.

Surface preparation is often essential to achieve a reliable glue joint. This typically includes cleaning to remove oils and dust, drying to control moisture, and sometimes roughening or priming the surface. Primers, adhesion promoters, or surface treatments can improve bonding on substrates with low surface energy or difficult chemistries. The choice of adhesive also influences glueability, with options including epoxies, cyanoacrylates, polyurethanes, and hot-melt or pressure-sensitive products, each offering different strength, gap tolerance, and temperature performance.

Common glueable materials include wood, paper, cardboard, many metals with proper preparation, ceramics, and a range of plastics. Within plastics, high surface energy types such as acrylics and ABS often bond well, while low surface energy plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene pose challenges without surface treatment or specialized adhesives. Bond design, joint geometry, and anticipated service conditions (loads, humidity, temperature) are important considerations beyond the substrate itself.

Limitations exist; some materials inherently resist bonding, and environmental exposure can degrade joints over time. In such cases, mechanical fastening or combined approaches may be more appropriate.
