While the term "glowalgae" is not a scientifically recognized taxonomic group, it commonly refers to dinoflagellates, a type of single-celled plankton.

Bioluminescence in these algae is typically a defense mechanism. When disturbed, such as by the movement of a boat or a swimming fish, they emit a blue-green light. This sudden flash can startle predators, making them more visible to their own predators, or it can serve as a warning signal. The intensity of the glow can vary greatly depending on the species and the level of disturbance.

Glowalgae blooms, also known as red tides or algal blooms, can occur in various marine environments. While some blooms are harmless and beautiful, others can produce toxins that are harmful to marine life and humans. The visual spectacle of glowing ocean waters is a popular attraction in certain coastal areas, often observed during night tours or kayaking excursions.
