gestualidade

Gestualidade is the term used to describe the use of body movements—especially hand and arm gestures, facial expressions, and posture—as a mode of communication in daily life and as a subject of academic study. In Portuguese-speaking contexts, the term encompasses natural nonverbal behavior that accompanies or replaces spoken language, as well as more formal gesture systems used in arts, theater, or sign languages. While sign languages are fully developed languages with their own grammar, gestualidade often denotes spontaneous, culturally embedded gestures used in ordinary interaction.

In communication science, gestualidade plays a dual role: it supplements spoken language by adding meaning, emphasis,

Cultural variation is a hallmark of gestualidade. Gestures can differ widely between communities, leading to misinterpretation

This term thus captures both everyday nonverbal behavior and the broader study of how people convey meaning
