Geselle is a term used in the traditional guild system of German-speaking crafts for a skilled worker who has completed an apprenticeship and is qualified to practice the trade under a master, but has not yet attained master status. The plural form is Gesellen, and the female form is Gesellin. A Geselle typically holds a certificate, often called the Gesellenbrief or journeyman certificate, which confirms qualification and the right to work in the trade.
Historically, many trades required a period of travel after qualification, known as the Wanderjahre or Wanderschaft.
