Gerontes is a Greek term meaning “elders” or “old men,” derived from the Greek geron. In classical Greek usage, it referred to older male citizens who possessed social authority and could participate in governance. The word is best known in connection with Sparta’s institutional structure, but it also appears in discussions of other city-states and in modern analyses of aging-influenced politics.

In Sparta, the governing body commonly associated with the term was the Gerousia, or Council of Elders. This council consisted of 28 gerontes aged at least 60 plus the two kings. Members were chosen for life. The Gerousia prepared legislation for the Apella, the citizen assembly, and acted as a high court for serious criminal cases and for important political decisions. It held substantial influence over foreign and domestic policy, though real political power was shared with other institutions, including the ephors and the Apella.

Beyond Sparta, the concept of elder councils or rule by senior citizens appears in various Greek states, often under the broader label of gerontocracy—the rule of the elders. The social weight of age carried moral associations of wisdom and experience in some contexts, while in others power rested more on wealth or lineage, limiting the supposed authority of age.

Today, gerontes survives mainly as a linguistic root in terms like gerontology (the study of aging) and in scholarly discussions of gerontocracy, rather than as a common, specific political title.
