Geotermisten use a range of methods such as geological mapping, geophysical surveys, petrophysical analysis, geochemical testing, and numerical modeling to evaluate temperature, permeability, fluid flow, and reservoir size. They may specialize in conventional hydrothermal resources, Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), or direct-use applications like district heating, greenhouses, and spa facilities. Technologies employed include binary-cycle, flash, and dry-steam power plants, as well as heat pumps and binary or hybrid configurations.

Historically, geothermal energy has been utilized since ancient times for bathing and heating, with significant development in the early 20th century in places like Larderello, Italy. The latter half of the century saw broader adoption in Iceland, the United States, the Philippines, and other regions, driven by advances in drilling, resource management, and environmental controls.

Environmental and social considerations are central to the field, including minimizing emissions, managing water resources, reducing land use impacts, and addressing induced seismicity. Education for geotermisten typically spans geology, geophysics, and engineering, often within collaborative programs and professional societies focused on geothermal energy.
