Gem-mology is the field of study and practice concerned with gemstones, and a gemmologe (gemmologen in some languages) is a professional who analyzes, identifies, authenticates, and grades stones. Gemmologen determine mineral species and variety, assess cut and craftsmanship, detect treatments and simulants, and estimate origin and stability. They prepare lab reports and certificates used by retailers, collectors, insurers, and courts, and may advise on purchase, valuation, or appraisal. They often work in jewelry stores, gem laboratories, auction houses, mining companies, museums, or as independent consultants.

Training and certification: Many gemmologen complete formal education in gemology at universities or dedicated schools such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A). Common credentials include GIA's Graduate Gemologist (GG) designation and Gem-A's FGA or DGA diplomas.

Techniques: Identification combines macroscopic inspection with instruments and methods such as refractive index measurement, specific gravity testing, spectroscopy (UV-Vis, FTIR), microscopy, and, in advanced labs, X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy. They distinguish natural stones from synthetics or simulants and identify post-mining treatments (filling, diffusion, heating), as well as determine possible origin clues.

Ethics and scope: Gemmologen adhere to professional standards, disclose treatment history and origin when certifying stones, and promote transparency in trade, particularly regarding diamond and colored-stone sourcing and the avoidance of conflict stones.

History: Modern gemology emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries with advances in mineralogy and laboratory testing. Major centers included Antwerp, Amsterdam, and later New York and Tokyo. Institutions like GIA helped standardize terminology, testing, and certification worldwide.
