Gemologist

A gemologist is a professional who studies gemstones, including their properties, identification, authentication, grading, and valuation. They may work with diamonds, colored stones, pearls, and other gem materials, and can be employed by laboratories, jewelry firms, auction houses, or operate as independent appraisers.

Core duties include identifying gem material and distinguishing natural stones from synthetics and simulants, evaluating quality using standard criteria, and assessing treatments or enhancements. They compile reports detailing identity, origin when possible, measurements, and any treatments, and may provide valuations, buying or selling guidance, or insurance appraisals. They may also advise on setting, conservation, or authentication for museums or collections.

To perform their work, gemologists use a range of instruments and techniques such as a loupe and microscope for surface features, refractometer and polariscope for optical properties, spectroscope or spectrometry for absorption features, UV lamps, and tools for determining specific gravity and hardness. Advanced laboratories may employ Raman spectroscopy or X-ray fluorescence to support results.

Training typically combines geology or mineralogy with dedicated gemology courses. Certification is offered by organizations including the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), IGI, and AGS, among others. Many gemologists hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees and pursue continuing education to keep up with new treatments, synthetic materials, and grading standards.
