fólia

Fólia is a thin, flexible sheet produced from metal, plastic, or other materials. It is created by rolling a material into a very thin form, allowing it to be easily bent, wrapped, or laid as a layer. The term is used broadly in Hungarian to refer to sheets such as aluminium foil, plastic film, and laminated foils.

Common uses include food packaging and preservation (such as aluminium foil and plastic wrap), wrapping and protecting goods, and lining or insulating surfaces. In construction and agriculture, fólia refers to coverings and barriers—for example greenhouse films and moisture or vapor barriers used to control humidity and temperature. Foils can also serve decorative or functional roles in electronics, optics, and crafts.

Material and properties vary by type. Metal foils, especially aluminium, offer high barrier properties against moisture, light, and gases and are relatively heat conductive and conductive. Plastic foils (polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, and others) can be transparent or opaque, flexible, and sometimes laminated with other materials to combine properties such as strength, clarity, and barrier performance. Thickness ranges from a few micrometers to several tens of micrometers, with thicker foils providing greater durability or rigidity in specific applications.

Environmental considerations include recycling and disposal. Metal foils are widely recyclable in metal streams, while plastic foils require separate recycling or specialized waste handling. Biodegradable or compostable foils are being developed to reduce environmental impact.
