Fruitvleermuizen, also known as megabats, are a subfamily of bats belonging to the order Chiroptera. Unlike their insectivorous microbat counterparts, fruit bats primarily feed on fruit, nectar, and pollen. They are found in tropical and subtropical regions across the Eastern Hemisphere, including Africa, Asia, Australia, and islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

These bats are characterized by their generally larger size compared to microbats, prominent canine teeth, and the presence of claws on their second finger as well as their first. Their eyes are also typically larger, reflecting their reliance on sight and smell for navigation and foraging, especially in low light conditions. Fruit bats do not use echolocation; instead, they navigate using their keen eyesight and sense of smell.

The diet of fruit bats plays a crucial role in their ecosystems. By consuming fruit, they aid in seed dispersal, helping to regenerate forests and maintain plant diversity.
