Formálhatóságot, often translated as "formability" or "moldability," refers to the intrinsic property of a material that describes its ability to be shaped or deformed into a desired form without fracturing or excessive thinning. This property is crucial in manufacturing processes that involve altering the shape of materials, such as metal stamping, deep drawing, extrusion, and forging.

The formability of a material is influenced by several factors, including its microstructure, yield strength, tensile strength, ductility, work hardening rate, and strain rate sensitivity. Materials with high ductility and a low yield strength generally exhibit better formability. The degree of anisotropy, which is the directional dependence of material properties, also plays a significant role. For instance, materials with uniform properties in all directions tend to be more formable.

Assessing formability typically involves various mechanical tests. These can include tensile tests to determine ultimate tensile strength and elongation, Erichsen cupping tests to evaluate the depth of a dome that can be formed before fracture, and Limiting Dome Height (LDH) tests which provide more detailed information about the material's behavior under biaxial stress conditions. Understanding and controlling formability is essential for achieving successful manufacturing outcomes, minimizing material waste, and ensuring the structural integrity of the final product.
