Folliculitis is a common skin condition characterized by inflammation of the hair follicles. These follicles are small pockets in the skin from which hairs grow. The inflammation typically appears as small, red bumps or pustules, often with a central hair. It can be itchy or tender and may occur anywhere on the body where hair grows, including the scalp, face, legs, and torso.

The primary cause of folliculitis is infection, most commonly by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Fungal infections can also lead to folliculitis, especially in warm, moist environments. Other contributing factors include irritation from shaving, tight clothing, friction, prolonged exposure to water, and certain medical conditions like diabetes or a weakened immune system.

Folliculitis can be categorized into superficial and deep types. Superficial folliculitis affects only the upper part of the hair follicle and is generally less severe, often resolving on its own. Deep folliculitis involves the entire follicle and can lead to more significant inflammation, pain, and potentially scarring.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination of the affected skin. In some cases, a skin scraping or culture may be performed to identify the causative organism. Treatment depends on the severity and cause of the folliculitis. Mild cases may respond to warm compresses and antiseptic washes. For bacterial infections, topical or oral antibiotics may be prescribed. Antifungal medications are used for fungal folliculitis. Preventing recurrence often involves good hygiene practices, avoiding irritants like shaving too closely, and managing underlying medical conditions.
