Fluidimpervious refers to a property of materials or surfaces that resist or prevent the passage of liquids under defined conditions. The term is used in specifications to indicate that a product will not allow a liquid to permeate, seep, or leak through it, often under pressure, immersion, or other stressors. It can apply to coatings, films, fabrics, membranes, and engineered composites, and is common in contexts such as protective clothing, medical devices, packaging, and building or electronic enclosures.

Materials described as fluidimpervious achieve this behavior through a combination of low porosity, dense microstructure, chemical resistance, and, when appropriate, surface treatments or laminates. Common approaches include dense polymer films, layered coatings, nonporous membranes, or multi-layer assemblies that trap liquids and/or shed them from the surface. The effectiveness of imperviousness is usually specified for particular fluids, temperatures, pressures, and durations, recognizing that performance can vary with chemical compatibility and mechanical wear.

Testing for fluidimperviousness typically involves controlled liquid exposure to a sample and monitoring for breakthrough or leakage. Methods may include hydrostatic or head-based tests, immersion trials, or liquid-penetration assessments, conducted at defined fluid types and environmental conditions to determine whether the material meets the required standard of impermeability.

Limitations include the specificity of the impermeability to certain fluids and conditions. A material that is fluidimpervious to water may not be resistant to aggressive solvents, and mechanical damage, aging, or high temperatures can compromise its barrier properties.
